Tualatin, OR – A Washington County sheriff’s deputy was shot multiple times while trying to detain a suspect at an apartment complex on Wednesday morning.

The series of events leading up to the shooting began at approximately 9:30 a.m. on July 26, when Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) deputies arrived at the Forest Rim Apartments near Southwest Nyberg Street to serve a civil eviction notice, KGW reported.

WCSO Detective Anel Ceric said that approximately one hour after they arrived, deputies alerted dispatch that they were “fighting with a person inside the apartment,” according to Oregon Public Broadcasting.

“Several seconds later, they notified us that shots were fired,” Det. Ceric added.

Investigators said one deputy was shot multiple times during the attack.

At least one other deputy was able to return fire, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported.

Law enforcement officers swarmed the scene and evacuated nearby residents as a standoff ensued between the suspect and police.

The Washington County SWAT team later entered the apartment and found the suspect dead inside, but Det. Ceric said the gunman had not been shot by the SWAT officers.

The suspect’s identity was not immediately released.

The wounded deputy was airlifted to Legacy Emanuel hospital in North Portland and was listed in critical condition on Wednesday night, KGW reported.

Det. Ceric said he was shot “multiple times in his body,” according to KOIN.

His identity was not immediately released and his prognosis is unclear.

“We can’t talk about or identify the injured deputy,” Washington County Sheriff Pat Garrett told reporters. “I want you to know that I know him. He is an incredible person. He is a complete professional. He is compassionate. He is also resilient and tenacious.”

“This tragedy reminds us today that police work can be very dangerous,” Sheriff Garrett added. “We owe our law enforcement officers a debt of gratitude for the work they do.”

The Beaverton Police Department is leading the investigation into the incident with the assistance of the Washington County Major Crimes team, KGW reported.
