Painesville, OH – The wife of a Gates Mills police officer killed herself after she shot her husband through a door in their Painesville home on Monday.

“My wife just shot me. Please,” 27-year-old Gates Mills Police Officer Dylan Hustosky told a 911 dispatcher just after 4 p.m. “She’s going to kill me. She already shot me through the door.”

“I’m bleeding out all over the place,” he said.

Officer Hustosky made the call from his cell phone as he fled from his residence, The Plain Dealer reported.

As the dispatcher attempted to give the officer instructions for a makeshift tourniquet, a gunshot rang out.

Officer Hustosky immediately began screaming and wailing.

“Please! Please Kayleigh, please!” he yelled desperately at one point.

Police raced to the scene and found Officer Hustosky outside Heritage Middle School with two gunshot wounds to his left arm. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition following surgery.

Officers attempted to contact Officer Hustosky’s wife, 29-year-old Kayleigh Hustosky, but received no response, WJW reported.

A SWAT team was dispatched, and police used drones and a robot to enter the residence, The Plain Dealer reported.

At 7:42 p.m., they found Kayleigh’s body inside the home with a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to Painesville Police Chief Dan Waterman, the couple had lived at the residence for approximately two years, and have a three-year-old son, WJW reported.

Their child was at a relative’s home at the time of the incident, and the chief said the department had no reports of prior disturbances at the couple’s home.

Officer Hustosky’s duty weapon was not the weapon used in the attack.

According to Gates Mills Police Chief Gregg Minichello, Officer Hustosky has been with the department for four-and-one-half years.

“I wish I had 10 of him,” Chief Minichello told WEWS. “Our condolences go out to Dylan and his entire family. We are and will continue to support the Hustosky family in any way that we can.”

The shooting remains under investigation.
