Albany, NY – A police officer shot and killed a 20-year-old man who was stabbing his mother on Friday night.

Albany Police Chief Robert Sears called the shooting “must and just” in the aftermath.

“The actions of the officers saved that woman’s life last night,” Chief Sears said at a press conference on Saturday, according to The Times Union.

Police said that Officer Elston Mackey and Derrick Ellis responded to a 911 call from 61 Partridge Street about someone who had a weapon at approximately 11:30 p.m. on June 22.

A woman could be heard screaming in the background of the call to police, but they didn’t get much information about the situation ahead of the officers’ arrival, police said.

Upon arrival at the address, witnesses told police there was a woman on the floor at the bottom of the staircase inside the house.

Officers could see a 52-year-old woman through the window who was bleeding from her head, face, and neck, so they called for an ambulance and began trying to get into the residence, Chief Sears said.

As police struggled to break the thick glass on the front door, Schuyler Lake appeared at the top of the staircase with a knife in his hand.

Chief Sears said that Lake, the victim’s son, ignored officers’ commands to drop the knife, and instead went down the stairs and began attacking his mother again, The Times Union reported.

At that point, Officer Mackey stuck his hand through the glass and fired several shots at the man, killing him, according to WPIX-TV.

Lake’s mother, whom police said lived at the house, was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

A search of the house also turned up Lake’s 55-year-old uncle, who was suffering from stab wounds to the abdomen, according to WPIX.

The uncle was transported by ambulance, and hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Chief Sears said the Albany Police had no prior contact with Lake, and that the 20-year-old had no criminal history that would indicate anything like that stabbing would happen.

The chief said that the officers who responded to the incident were wearing body cameras; however, the videos have not yet been released.

The officers, who have both been on the Albany police force for two years, were placed on administrative leave while an internal investigation was conducted, as is protocol.
