Atlanta, GA – A Georgia Tech Police Department officer was forced to shoot an armed and apparently suicidal student Saturday night after attempts by the officers to de-escalate failed (video of shooting below.)

Now the family of the student has already hired an attorney who is criticizing the officers for failing to de-escalate the situation with non-lethal measures.

Cell phone video of the incident has made it out which shows the officers attempting to de-escalate the situation with Scout Schultz.

The incident happened Saturday night at around 11:17 PM when officers responded to an 8th Street dorm for reports of somebody armed with a knife and a gun.

Officers arrived and made contact with Schultz, who was holding a knife. The video shows officers attempting to talk to Schultz and de-escalate.

“Come on man, drop the knife,” an officer says.

“Shoot me!” Schultz screamed in response.

“No! Drop the knife!”

Schultz continued to advance on the officers.

“Drop the knife man, come on,” an officer continued. “Nobody wants to shoot you.”

“Shoot me.”

“Nobody wants to hurt you man,” the officer said as he continues to tell him to drop the knife. “What’s going on man? What are we doing? What are we doing here?””

The officers continued to try to talk to Schultz to de-escalate while telling him to drop the knife. Finally, Schultz continued to advance on officers and was shot once in the chest.

Schultz was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead.

Scout Schultz’s father posted to Facebook on Sunday saying, “Our son, Scout Schultz, was killed last night by the Georgia Tech police. He had a tiny knife. They didn’t have to shoot him in the heart, but that’s what they did. Antifa activists beware!”

The family has hired trial attorney L. Chris Stewart to represent them, and he is “wondering why authorities didn’t de-escalate the situation,” according to 11 Alive.
