West Palm Beach, FL – A 24-year-old couple were lying in the middle of a roadway watching the lunar eclipse when they were run over by a police vehicle on Sunday night.

The incident occurred at about 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 20 at the height of the eclipse, near the 3100 block of North Jog Road, WPLG reported.

Investigators said the officer was patrolling a nature preserve around midnight, driving about five miles-per-hour, when he ran over the pair, WESH reported.

The police officer was driving a Ford Explorer SUV.

The man and woman, who lived nearby the park, were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said they believed the couple was at the nature preserve to watch and take pictures of the super blood wolf moon eclipse because the park was “extremely dark,” WPLG reported.

The officer was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, according to WESH.

It’s very rare for a total lunar eclipse to occur at the same time as a supermoon, according to CNN.

A lunar eclipse can only happen during a full moon, and a supermoon occurs when a full moon is closest to earth in orbit.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac explained that in January, the full moon is called a “wolf moon” because of the howling wolves that could be heard this time of year.
