Yonkers, NY – A Hastings-on-Hudson police officer heroically saved a little boy she saw jump from an overpass on her way to work on Friday.

Hastings-on-Hudson Officer Jessie Ferreira Cavallo was on her way to work on Aug. 3 when she saw a pre-teen boy running along Saw Mill River Parkway just before Exit 9, News 12 Westchester reported.

Officer Ferreira Cavallo said she watched with horror as the boy climbed up over a guardrail and jumped about 30 feet from an overpass onto concrete below, USA Today reported.

“Everything happened so fast and I think my adrenaline was pumping so high,” she said. “He just climbed up and jumped off.”

Officer Ferreira Cavallo said she stopped her car on the shoulder, stuffed her pockets with supplies from the first-aid kit in her car and then jumped after the boy, USA Today reported.

“I wasn’t thinking too much,” she said. “I just knew, when I looked down and saw him… he looked dead. I couldn’t see anything other than blood. I thought to myself, ‘He needs help. I need to help him.'”

The brave officer landed her own jump off the overpass without injury, and was able to perform CPR on the boy with another Good Samaritan who stopped to help her.

“Both me and her together, we were able to aid him and assist him,” she said. The woman who stopped to assist the officer was wearing a military uniform, USA Today reported.

They put a neck brace and an arm-splint on the unresponsive boy, and cleared his airway of blood multiple times, Officer Ferreira Cavallo told News 12.

“We were talking to each other like we worked together,” she said, according to USA Today.

The boy regained consciousness before the ambulance arrived, but was mostly non-responsive, Officer Ferreira Cavallo said.

The boy was transferred to Westchester Medical Center where he remained with broken bones and other injuries, New12 reported.

He was a student at the Andrus School for vulnerable children, located two miles away from the overpass where he jumped, according to News12.

Officer Ferreira Cavallo said she didn’t realize how far she had jumped until she re-looked at the scene the next day.

“Friday, after this whole thing happened, I went to work and worked to 11 p.m.,” she said. “I didn’t realize what was going on until yesterday. That’s when it hit me. I didn’t realize how high it was. It seemed doable. It didn’t seem that high. I thought I jumped over a brick wall, or a cement barrier. It was so fast. It was more like tunnel vision. I saw the boy and I needed to get to him. I didn’t see anything else.”

The officer has a history of putting others’ safety first, and has earned six lifesaving awards in her seven years on the police force, USA Today reported.

In her previous career as a Mount Vernon police officer, Officer Ferreira Cavallo saved an elderly man who was suffering from a heart attack by utilizing a defibrillator and performing CPR.

She has received several awards from the Hastings-on-Hudson Police Department for administering successful naloxone injections to people who had overdosed on heroin, according to USA Today.

Officer Ferreira Cavallo was also recognized for her undercover work on a county task force working in conjunction with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
