Port Huron, MI – An off-duty Port Huron police lieutenant was killed, and two other individuals were injured, during a shooting in Clyde Township early Friday morning.

St. Clair County deputies responded to a report of “shots fired with multiple victims” just before 1 a.m., WXYZ reported.

When they arrived at the scene, they found a 57-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman suffering from gunshot wounds.

According to investigators, the attacker was the female victim’s 30-year-old estranged husband, the Times Herald reported.

She ran to the male victim’s home in an attempt to escape the gunman, according to WXYZ.

The neighbor exchanged gunfire with the attacker, but did not hit the suspect, the Times Herald reported.

The neighbor sustained a gunshot wound to the leg.

Both victims were rushed to a local hospital.

According to WXYZ, police said the woman was “not doing well.”

Meanwhile, deputies were directed to a nearby apartment, where they found an off-duty Port Huron police lieutenant dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

The lieutenant, who was in his 40s, had been visiting the female victim when the gunman opened fire, St. Clair County Undersheriff Tom Buckley told the Times Herald.

The shooter fled the scene and escaped into the woods, WXYZ reported.

Investigators were able to use his cell phone to track him to a gas station in Southfield, where he was arrested at approximately 5 a.m.

He is being held at the St. Clair County Intervention and Detention Center while deputies and the Port Huron Police Department continue their investigation into the shooting.

U.S. Marshals are also assisting with the investigation, WXYZ reported.

Aaron Shown, who lives in the apartment building where the shooting occurred, said the female victim, who works for the city of Port Huron, had moved in less than a month ago, the Times Herald reported.

He said he had seen a man dropping off the woman’s daughter at the building in the past.

Shown said that after the woman moved in, he noticed someone loitering around the building, and once spotted someone who appeared to be following him.

“They stopped right at that side down where I could see the headlights," he told the Times Herald. "I thought, 'This is kind of weird.'"

The landlord also sent an email to tenants in the building, and said that someone had been ringing doorbells during odd hours, Shown said.

"Anybody who loses their life, especially a police officer, makes you feel real bad," told the Times Herald. “This kind of stuff doesn’t happen out here.”
