Weld County, CO – An off-duty Adams County deputy was fatally shot by police after he led officers on a high-speed pursuit on Jan. 16.

Adams County Deputy Jesse Jenson, 40, was taken off of life support at approximately 6 p.m. last Friday, KDVR reported.

The incident began at approximately 10:25 p.m. on Jan 16, when law enforcement officers from multiple agencies began pursuing two vehicles on Highway 85.

Police did not say what prompted the high-speed chase, which topped speeds of 90 miles per hour as it continued on into the town of Evans, The Denver Post reported.

The vehicles stopped at the intersection of Highway 85 and 42nd Street, where a confrontation ensued between Deputy Jenson and a LaSalle police officer, according to the Greeley Police Department.

The LaSalle officer ultimately shot the off-duty deputy during the encounter, but the events that led up to the use of deadly force is unclear.

Deputy Jenson was not conducting law enforcement-related duties at the time of the chase, and was not in a marked patrol unit, Greeley Police Department Sergeant Joe Tymkowych told The Denver Post.

Deputy Jenson was rushed to North Colorado Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition until his death, KDVR reported.

“Deputy Jenson was removed from life support this afternoon, and he has passed away,” the Adams County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release, according to The Denver Post. “He was surrounded by friends and family.”

He was a two-year veteran of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, and was assigned to the Jail Division at the time of his death.

The unnamed second driver involved in the pursuit has been questioned by police, but no charges have been filed, The Denver Post reported.

A team of supervisors, technicians, six crime scene investigators, and ten detectives and investigators are looking into the Greeley Police Department-led case.
