New York, NY – A minor traffic accident ended up with an off-duty New York city firefighter dying Sunday in what police believe is a road-rage killing.

Bravest Coto, 33, was found lying outside his car with severe head trauma, according to the New York Post.

The murky surveillance video showed Coto pulling over to the right shoulder of the exit and another car getting off with him, according to police. Police suspect the two cars may have bumped into each other or one car may have cut the other one off at some point, according to the New York Post.

Police said the two parties may have been pulling over to hash out what happened.

Authorities believe the two drivers got out of their cars and began to argue and then fought, according to the New York Post. Coto was hit with an unknown object and had puncture wounds that were not consistent with a car crash, according to the police.

A person who called 911 told police he saw two people fighting and then said one of them was lying on the road, according to the New York Post.

When medics and police got to the scene, Coto was on the ground. He was taken to the hospital and was declared dead.

The other car belonged to a reputed gang member, according to the New York Post. Police were searching for it.

“It’s a tragedy,” said FDNY spokesman Jim Long, according to the New York Post. “He was a young man who decided to dedicate himself and his life to serve others. Now he’s gone.”

Coto wasn’t married and didn’t have any children. He worked for the FDNY for three years, according to the New York Post.

WCBS reported that Coto was also a rapper and hip hop artist performing under the name FAIYA.
