Pomona, CA – Former National Football League cornerback Brandon Browner was sentenced to eight years in prison for trying to kill his ex-girlfriend after he broke into her California home.

Browner, a former NFL cornerback, pleaded no contest to attempted murder as part of a plea deal with prosecutors, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. ESPN reported that Browner, 34, also pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of cruelty to a child.

The judge also ordered Browner to stay away from the victim and her two children for 10 years, according to ESPN.

Browner chased and dragged his former girlfriend around her home and then tried to smother her in a carpet while the couple’s two children were present, according to the Washington Post.

On Tuesday, Browner appeared in court to make his plea, according to TMZ. He was immediately remanded into custody after the hearing and put in jail. He did get credit for 300 days for good behavior during his time.

He had been in custody since his arrest in July, according to TMZ.

Browner also stole a Rolex watch worth $20,000. That was Browner’s fourth arrest since July of 2016, according to the Washington Post.

He was arrested on cocaine charges in May of 2017. He was arrested on a felony charge of making threats toward a woman in September of 2017. Browner was also charged in July of 2016 with assaulting the grandfather of his child at the child’s mother house.

Browner signed a three-year, $15 million contract with the New Orleans Saints in 2015, according to Business Insider. His last year in the NFL was with the Saints in 2015. He won Super Bowl championships with the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots. While with the Seahawks, he was an original member of the defensive backfield called The Legion of Boom.
