New York, NY – National Football League linebacker Trevor Bates allegedly pummeled a New York Police Department sergeant after he was arrested for refusing to pay a $32 cab fare at a New York hotel.

Bates was taken to a Queens police station when he flew into a rage, according to the New York Post.

The police sergeant came over to calm down Bates, who in the holding cell.

Sgt. James O’Brien told Bates he had to be fingerprinted but Bates refused, according to the police.

Sergeants Benevolent Association President Ed Mullins said Sgt. O’Brien assured him that it was no big deal and told Bates, “You’ll get scanned. You’ll get paper. You’ll get a court date.”

Mullins said that out of the blue, Bates attacked Sgt. O’Brien, who never saw the attack coming.

Sgt. O’Brien was punched in the left eye and was momentarily blinded, according to Mullins.

Several police officers had to subdue Bates. Police used a Taser on him but the NFL player just ripped the prongs out, according to Mullins.

Sgt. O’Brien was taken to the hospital and was released after being treated for a concussion, according to the New York Post. Sgt. O’Brien received three stitches above his eye, according to police.

Bates, 25, will be charged with second-degree assault, obstructing governmental administration, theft of services and resisting arrest, according to the New York Post.

If convicted, Bates, who is 6-foot-2 and 247 pounds, could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.

Bates had a salary of $310,585 in 2018. Bates played in nine games this past season for the Detroit Lions. He was a seventh-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in the 2016 NFL draft.

“We are aware of the arrest of Trevor Bates earlier today in New York,” said Lions general manager Bob Quinn, according to ESPN. “We have not spoken to Trevor as of yet and are still in the process of gathering more information. The Detroit Lions will have no further comment at this time.”
