Tampa, FL – National Football League linebacker Reuben Foster was arrested late Saturday night at the team hotel and charged with misdemeanor domestic violence.
After his latest arrest, the San Francisco 49ers fired him.
Foster, a 6-foot-1, 245-pound linebacker, was arrested at 9:10 p.m. at the Grand Hyatt hotel and booked into jail, according to ESPN.
He posted a $2,000 bond Sunday morning and was ordered to not have any contact with the accuser.
Police said that a 28-year-old woman claimed that Foster, 24, slapped her phone out of her hand and then pushed her in the chest area.
Foster then slapped her with an open hand on the right side of her face, according to CNN.
Police officers also saw a one-inch scratch on the woman’s left collarbone, according to CNN.
The police said that Foster and the woman had lived together in the past, and that they were in an on-again, off-again relationship over the past three years.
The 49ers released Foster just hours before their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“We have a set of standards in place that the players were involved with in developing,” said San Francisco General Manger John Lynch, according to ESPN. “In this case, it was communicated exceptionally clear and to the point as to what we expected out of him and unfortunately what transpired yesterday, this isn’t a comment on what happened there because that would be mere speculation on our part.”
“It’s more of a comment on him not living up to what we had communicated and to the energy and the time that we’ve invested in him,” Lynch said. “That doesn’t mean we don’t love him, we all do, we care for him but we feel like it’s in the best interest of our organization to move on at this point and that’s a very tough decision.”
In April, Foster was arrested on charges of felony domestic violence in Los Gatos at his house, according to ESPN.
In that incident, Foster allegedly attacked his girlfriend in two months earlier at their home and bruised her and ruptured her eardrum, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney.
Those charges were dismissed after the victim became uncooperative with prosecutors. Still, the Santa Clara County DA said there was evidence that Foster “seriously hurt his girlfriend, according to CNN.
Foster had a base salary of $463,610 in 2018 and had a $1.1 million signing bonus. He was a first-round draft pick out of Alabama in 2017 for the 49ers. He played in 10 game in 2017 and six games in 2018.
