Bedford, TX – A junior high school resource counselor accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a ninth-grade student turned herself in to police on an arrest warrant on Thursday, the department said.

Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District counselor Shannon Hathaway, 33, allegedly had sex with a 17-year-old male student on approximately 12 occasions at her residence and at the student’s mother’s home.

She allegedly said that she was in love with the student, and assured him that she planned to leave her husband to be with him, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

The teen ended the relationship after his mother caught him and Hathaway naked in bed together, KTVT reported.

The Bedford Police Department became aware of the allegations against Hathaway on May 9, after the teen’s sister told school administrators about the inappropriate relationship, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

The girl explained that Hathaway spent a lot of time with her ninth-grade brother during the 2016-2017 school year and said that Hathaway had told her that she planned to leave her husband to be with the teen.

According to court documents, Hathaway and the boy had sex at his mother’s home on eight occasions and at Hathaway’s own residence on two or three occasions, KTVT reported.

The teen’s sister disclosed that her brother and Hathaway also “potentially” had sex at Harwood Junior High, but details regarding the allegation were unclear, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

Hathaway was placed on paid administrative leave at the time that the allegations came to light.

Harwood Junior High School Principal Dr. Toby Givens notified parents and guardians of the counselor’s suspension in a May 21 letter, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

“This is standard procedure when concerns are brought forward indicating the potential violation of a district policy,” Givens wrote. “In an abundance of caution, the district is conducting a full and complete investigation…Only after a full and complete investigation will any actions, if needed, be taken.”

Hathaway resigned from her position with the school district on Thursday morning, just before she turned herself in to Bedford police for the offense of improper relationship between educator and student, KTVT reported.

She had been with the district since 2012.

Hathaway was being held at the Tarrant County Jail on $5,000 bond, Heavy reported.

If convicted of the second-degree felony offense, she faces between two and 20 years in prison.
