Milwaukee, WI – A city of Milwaukee police officer was murdered in the line of duty Wednesday evening.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. in the area of North 28th and West Wright Street, according to Chief Alfonso Morales.

Special operations officers were hunting a suspect wanted for outstanding drug and weapon warrants.

The officers tracked the suspect to a residence. When the officers arrived, the suspect opened fire on them, fatally shooting a police officer.

Officers returned fire, but the suspect was not hit. The suspect was taken into custody. His gun was recovered on scene.

The officer was transported to Froedtert Hospital where officers are beginning to gather.

The officer has only been identified as a male 17-year veteran of the department.

There had been reports from the fire department of multiple gunshot victims, but the chief made no mention of anybody else hit by the gunfire.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family of the murdered hero.
