Dallas, TX – The driver accused of drunkenly slamming his vehicle into a Dallas police officer who was blocking traffic has been released on bond after serving less than a day in jail.

The fatal incident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, while 55-year-old Dallas Police Senior Corporal Earl “Jamie” Givens, and other members of the Dallas Motorcycle Unit were escorting the body of Dallas Senior Corporal Tyrone Andrews from a Dallas funeral home to another location in East Texas, Dallas Police Chief U Renee Hall said during a Saturday press conference.

“During the escort, Senior Corporal Earl ‘Jamie’ Givens positioned himself to block oncoming traffic to the eastbound entrance ramp of Interstate 20 at Bonnie View Road,” Chief Hall explained. “Senior Corporal Givens was stationary, and his motorcycle had the emergency lights emulating.”

Chief Hall said that a driver, later identified as 25-year-old Adrian Breedlove, crashed his Kia Sportage into the corporal “at a high rate of speed.” Cpl. Givens, a 32-year veteran of the force, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

After hitting Cpl. Givens, the Breedlove smashed the Kia into a concrete divider.

He subsequently showed impairment field sobriety tests, The Dallas Morning News reported.

According to KDFW, a source said the suspect’s blood-alcohol content was .19 at the time of his arrest.

Breedlove was charged with intoxication manslaughter casing the death of a peace officer, and unlawfully carrying a weapon, The Dallas Morning News reported.

He was released on $76,000 bond just after 2 a.m. on Sunday – less than 24 hours after the fatal collision.

On Monday, Dallas Police Association President Mike Mata issued a statement calling Breedlove’s release “reprehensible,” KXAS reported.

“It is reprehensible that Adrian Breedlove, the man arrested and charged with the intoxication manslaughter of a Dallas police officer, was given a $76,000 bail allowing him to spend less than one day in jail,” Mata said. “This was a violent death caused by a man whose blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit at 6AM. The officer he is charged with killing was a 55-year old father of two who was only months away from retirement.”

“We demand to know if District Attorney Faith Johnson asked a district court judge to require a more substantial bond for such a heinous crime,” he added. “If she made no such effort then perhaps it’s time to find a District Attorney who takes more seriously the killing of police officers.”
