Detroit, MI – The man who allegedly killed a retired Sterling Heights police sergeant in a drunken hit-and-run collision has been released after a judge set his bond at $1,000.

Retired sergeant Daryl Brown, 50, was crossing East Jefferson Avenue and Beaubien with a relative at around 2:15 a.m. Friday when a vehicle struck him.

That vehicle was allegedly driven by Jimi Pierowich, 30, while he was driving drunk, according to WXYZ.

After striking Brown, Pierowich fled the scene of the collision.

Detroit PD and medics responded to the scene and transported Brown to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The police department was able to locate Pierowich and take him into custody for operating while intoxicated causing death.

But at Pierowich’s arraignment, the judge made sure that the suspect was able to go home for Christmas.

The judge set Pierowich’s bond at 10 percent of $10,000 with an alcohol tether. Pierowich was freed shortly thereafter.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office released a statement to WXYZ which said, “This is is a very sad case. Mr. Brown was a man who dedicated his life to protect the public from harm. The alleged acts of the defendant took retired Sgt. Brown, from his family, friends, and the citizens of Sterling Heights. The defendant received a 10,000/10% bond with an alcohol tether. The Wayne County Prosecutor ‘s office will look at the appropriateness of this bond and address it in court.”

Pierowich is due back in court Jan. 2 for a probable cause hearing.
