Springfield, OR – Police believe a man set fire to his home early Wednesday morning to lure first responders into an ambush.

The emergency call about the fire at 536 Oakdale Avenue came in at about 4 a.m. on Oct. 17, KATU reported.

When the first fire crews arrived on the scene, somebody started shooting at them.

Firefighters retreated, and the SWAT team was called in to handle the active shooter, according to KATU.

The shooter continued firing at both police and firefighters before he turned the gun on himself, authorities said.

Springfield police said the man was firing a shotgun at officers, pointing to a hole blasted through a garage door and a guttered riddled with holes.

“The officer was right behind this rig, so that was a targeted shot toward the officer,” Springfield Police Lieutenant Scott McKee told KPIC.

The officer had taken up a defensive position behind an SUV and was not injured by the shotgun blasts, Lt. McKee said.

The gunman, who was about 60 years old, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, KATU reported.

At least three homes were completely destroyed in the blaze that raged for most of the night. Two more were seriously damaged, according to KPIC.

There were some injuries, but the shooter was the only reported death. No police or firefighters were injured during the incident.

The active shooter situation caused a delay in firefighters being able to battle the growing blaze, and the result was far more damage and loss of property, KPIC reported.

Several pieces of emergency equipment were damaged in the gunfight.

The windshield of a Eugene Springfield fire truck was pockmarked and cracked from gunfire, KPIC reported.

Police have not yet released the name of the gunman, but they confirmed that he lived in the first house that was set on fire.

The investigation was expected to keep the neighborhood on lockdown for as much as several days.
