Warsaw, NY – A 48-year-old man is accused of trying to kill a county sheriff early Tuesday morning after getting him to pull over and then and trying to stab the sheriff with a knife.

Lynn Hall was in his vehicle and following Wyoming County Sheriff Gregory Rudolph at about 6:35 a.m. Tuesday when Hall began to tailgate the sheriff and flash his lights.

Sheriff Rudolph was in uniform but was on his way to work in an unmarked Ford Taurus police vehicle, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle.

Sheriff Rudolph pulled over to see if the driver needed assistance and Hall pulled in front of the sheriff’s vehicle and blocked it, according to a press release from the state police.

Hall got out of his vehicle and approached Sheriff Rudolph in his vehicle. Sheriff Rudolph recognized Hall as someone who had applied for a permit for a pistol and had come to the sheriff’s office the day before to inquire about the status of the permit, the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle reported.

A struggle ensued on the road and Hall tried to grab Sheriff Rudolph’s weapon. During the fight, Hall ended up on top of Sheriff Rudolph and threatened to kill the sheriff with a knife, the state police said.

Two good Samaritans that were delivering newspapers as well as an off-duty New York State Trooper helped Sheriff Rudolph get Hall handcuffed and taken into custody.

Sheriff Rudolph was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle.

The New York State Police is handling the investigation.

Hall was taken to the state police barracks and processed, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle.

Hall is charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted first-degree assault, and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle.

Hall was arraigned and remains in jail without bail.

He won’t be getting his weapon permit.
