Baldwin, NY – A woman who claimed to have been a victim of a hate crime by President Donald Trump-supporting teenagers has admitted she made it all up.

Adwoa Lewis, 19, gave Nassau County detectives a written statement on Friday that described how four teenagers confronted her as she was driving home at about 11:15 p.m. on Sept. 2, WPIX reported.

Police said Lewis told them the teenagers yelled “Trump 2016” at her and told her she didn’t belong there.

Nassau County Police Detective Lieutenant Richard LeBrun said Lewis also told investigators that the teens yelled “Trump will make America great again!” at her, according to Newsday.

Lewis told police that after the altercation with the Trump supporters, she parked her 2008 Toyota Prius in front of her home on Jackson Street in Baldwin. But when she woke up the next morning, she found her tire slashed and a note on her car that said “Go home,” WPIX reported.

Det. Lt. LeBrun said that police initially investigated Lewis’s claims as a hate crime, Newsday reported.

After an “extensive investigation,” police investigators determined that Lewis had fabricated her entire story about the hate crime.

It wasn’t until authorities who had spent hours investigating her allegations confronted Lewis on Friday Sept. 14 with the findings of their investigation that the woman admitted to having made the whole thing up, according to Newsday.

When police questioned Lewis about the discrepancies in her story, she admitted that she had written the “Go Home” note herself and placed it on her car.

Nassau County police issued Lewis an appearance ticket for a false punishable written statement, Newsday reported.

She is due for a hearing in Hempstead at First District Court on Sept. 24.
