Mastic Beach, NY – A Long Island mother has been arrested for letting her unlicensed 15-year-old daughter take the car on her own.

Authorities said the girl was pulled over for speeding by a New York highway patrol bureau officer at about 9:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, WNBC reported.

Suffolk County police said the officer spotted the young driver piloting a 1997 Mercury Sable at a high rate of speed, going westbound on Sunrise Highway in Eastport, and initiated a traffic stop, according to Newsday.

Police did not release the details of exactly how fast the 15 year old was traveling when she was stopped, WPDH reported.

The teenage girl told the officer that her mother had given her the keys to the car and told her daughter to drive herself to her job, Newsday reported.

WPDH pointed out that while many teenagers would be thrilled to have their parents simply hand them the keys to a vehicle before they have actually gotten their driver’s license, the consequences of getting caught can be severe, both criminally and civilly.

Police arrested the girl’s mother, 41-year-old Yolanda Martinez-Reymundo of Mastic Beach, and charged her with endangering the welfare of a child, WNBC reported.

Martinez-Reymundo was taken to the 7th Precinct where she will be held overnight, according to Newsday.

Police said the mother is scheduled for an arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Monday, the Shirley Patch reported.

There was no information available about why she had allowed her daughter to driver her vehicle without a license or supervision.

Martinez-Reymundo is not the first parent to find herself in handcuffs for using poor judgement with the car keys.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol arrested 45-year-old Michelle Kirk and 54-year-old Timothy McCoy in July of 2016 after a trooper stopped the family’s 2000 Dodge Caravan for speeding, and found a 15-year-old behind the wheel, The News-Herald reported.

Police said the parents had allowed their unlicensed son to chauffer them to the Cedar Point amusement park because they were both too drunk to drive, despite the fact the incident occurred just after 8 a.m.

The parents were taken into the custody, and children’s services was contacted, according to The News-Herald.
