Kansas City, MO – The Kansas City Chiefs were told by the National Football League to stop trying to get video of its star running back assaulting a woman.

The Chiefs released Kareem Hunt after TMZ published a video of his February assault of a 19-year-old women at a hotel.

The Athletic reported the Chiefs were “told by the NFL to stop pursuing it later in February once the league began its investigation.” The Athletic is a subscription based sports website that launched in 2016.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported Nov. 30 that the NFL nor the Chiefs saw the video before it was published by TMZ.

The hotel said it was corporate policy to only give the video to law enforcement.

The Cleveland Police Department would not provide it to the NFL, according to Rapoport.

USA Today reported that the Cleveland police said that they had noted there was surveillance video of the assault, but they didn’t follow up on it because detectives only follow up on felonies. The assault was a misdemeanor, according to Cleveland Police Department Spokeswoman Jennifer Ciaccia.

In an interview with ESPN, Hunt said he didn’t tell the Chiefs everything about the assault.

Hunt told ESPN that the NFL never bothered to question him about the assault, even though the NFL said in a statement it began investigating the incident “immediately” after it happened.

ESPN also reported the NFL didn’t interview the 19-year-old victim of the assault.

“Consistent with investigatory practices, the NFL continues to pursue a complete understanding of the facts,” the NFL said on Twitter. The NFL also stated that the investigation will include “further conversations with all parties involved in the incident.”

Hunt was released by the Chiefs within 40 minutes of the video being released.

Hunt rushed for 1,327 yards in his rookie year in 2017 and had 834 yards rushing in 2018 before his release.
