Las Vegas, NV – Alert police officers stopped a woman posing as a child protective services worker from kidnapping a three-week-old baby on Monday.

Joanna Boyd, 39, called the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department dispatcher at about 12:25 p.m. on Nov. 26 to request a police escort to accompany her to a home, according to KSNV.

Boyd told the police dispatcher that she was a child protective services employee who had to do an emergency removal of a newborn child and needed an escort.

It is not uncommon for police to escort social workers in volatile situations such as changes of custody, a Las Vegas Metropolitan PD Captain Nicole Splinter told reporters at a press conference.

Boyd, who is a convicted felon, made arrangements to meet the officers at the corner of Nellis and Craig, nearby the home where the baby was located.

But when police arrived, all was not in order, KSNV reported.

Interestingly, the would-be kidnapper had all of the right paperwork and a court order, but she didn’t have a county ID to back her up.

The officers contacted the Child Protective Services office and quickly learned that Boyd was not, in fact, their employee.

That’s when they determined that the signature on the court order for the removal of the child was likely also fraudulent, KSNV reported.

The imposter was arrested and the kidnapping was thwarted because the officers were alert and thorough.

Police later said Boyd told them she had collected all of the necessary personally identifiable information about the baby and the baby’s parents by talking to the parents on Facebook about buying baby clothes, KVVU reported.

Boyd was able learn the baby’s name, date of birth, and the parents’ dates of birth by creeping the parents’ Facebook pages.

And that was all the information she needed to create all the paperwork to remove a child from its home, according to KVVU.

Boyd, who is from California, told police that she wanted to take the baby to replace her own baby who had been taken away.

Police arrested the would-be kidnapper and booked her into the Clark County Detention Center.

Boyd has been charged with attempted kidnapping, forgery, impersonating a public officer, possession of stolen vehicle, and possessing a stun gun as a felon, according to KFMB. She is schedule to appear in court on Thursday.

Las Vegas Metropolitan police have asked any other parents who may have encountered or interacted with Boyd online to come forward because she may have had numerous targets.
