Van Nuys, CA – Two people have been shot inside the CHAMPS Charter High School on Thursday afternoon.
Police were searching for two Hispanic male suspects near the campus, KCAL reported. Some stations were reporting there was a suspect in custody, but authorities have not confirmed that information.
There was a report of gunfire shortly after noon. There is some confusion as to where exactly the shooting took place. Police sources have said the gunshots came from across the street and struck a teacher and a student in the CHAMPS lunch area.
Witnesses initially said the suspects tried to take a shot at a teacher and student, KTLA reported. Authorities do not yet know who the target of the attack was.
The Los Angeles Police Department tweeted that the shooting did not occur on campus, and took place across the street from the school.
But witnesses told KTLA they saw two people being wheeled out of a campus building on gurneys.
They said both victims were sitting upright and appeared to be conscious, KTLA reported.
There is much confusion of where exactly the gunshots came from and how the victims were shot inside of campus.
The school has been put into lockdown but police said there was no longer any threat. Students would slowly be released from the building, KTLA reported. Students were also sheltering in place at the nearby Jack in the Box restaurant.
Update: LAPD said they have one of the suspects in custody, and officers are continuing to search for the second suspect.
Police have confirmed that the shooting took place across the street from the school at a Jack in the Box restaurant, but the teacher and student wounded were eating lunch in a fenced in, outdoor area with tables at the charter high school, KTLA reported.
CHAMPS, which is an acronym for Charter High School of Arts, Multimedia and Performing, has about 750 students.
