Fultonville, NY – New York State Police Trooper Jeremy VanNostrand was killed in the line of duty on Tuesday, when another driver crashed into the back of his vehicle and pushed him into oncoming traffic.

Trooper VanNostrand, 36, was traveling to work in his personal vehicle, and was waiting to turn into the New York State Police Fonda station when a box truck slammed into the back of his Nissan Altima at approximately 7:45 a.m., New York State Police Superintendent George Beach said during a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

The impact shoved the trooper’s Altima into oncoming traffic, where it was struck by a pickup truck.

Trooper VanNostrand was rushed to Albany Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the box truck was uninjured, and the driver of the pickup was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injures.

The crash remains under investigation, and no arrests or citations had been issued as of Tuesday afternoon, Superintendent Beach said.

Prior to joining the New York State Police in December of 2012, Trooper VanNostrand served as a New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Correction Officer for eight years.

The six-year veteran of the force was stationed in Fonda at the time of his death, and previously served at stations in Granville, Liberty, and Middletown.

“Trooper VanNostrand served the people of the state of New York with pride and professionalism,” the New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association said in a statement, according to KGTV.

“He made the ultimate sacrifice and he will never be forgotten,” the statement read. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and co-workers of Trooper VanNostrand during this difficult time.”

Superintendent Beach described Trooper VanNostrand as a “tremendous public servant” who was also a “good family man.”

“[We are] a brotherhood and a sisterhood,” Superintendent Beach said. “It is a family, and we all take these deaths very personally.”

Trooper VanNostrand leaves behind his wife and daughter, as well as his parents and two brothers.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of the fallen trooper.

“Trooper VanNostrand, who served as a member of the New York State Police for six years, dedicated his life to protecting New Yorkers,” Cuomo said in a statement, according to KGTV.

“His legacy of service, as a State Corrections Officer and then as a member of the New York State Police, was an inspiration to us all, and his example will live on for generations to come,” the governor continued. “On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of New York State Police Trooper Jeremy VanNostrand, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
