Snellville, GA – Gwinnett County Police Officer Antwan Toney has succumbed to his gunshot wounds after he was shot behind Shiloh Middle School Saturday afternoon.

The incident happened at around 3 p.m. after officers responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle near the middle school where the occupants were reported to possibly be smoking marijuana.

Gwinnett County Sergeant Jake Smith told reporters that two officers approached the vehicle without their guns drawn, and suddenly at least one occupant inside of the vehicle shot at them through the vehicle’s glass.

Officer Antwan Toney was struck by the gunfire. The other officer dragged Officer Toney away as the suspect vehicle took off.

The suspect vehicle crashed about 1 mile away and the occupants fled on foot.

Officer Toney was transported to the hospital in critical condition. He later succumbed to his injuries, according to Sergeant Smith.

It’s not clear if the officers were able to return fire.

The suspects are still on the loose. Sergeant Smith added that there were possibly up to 4 suspects in the vehicle, but the number of suspects is not known at this time.

A massive manhunt is underway for the suspects. The only suspect description is a 6-foot tall black male in a grey t-shirt and green sweatpants.

Officer Toney was a two year veteran of the department. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the Gwinnett County Police Department.
