Quincy, CA – An off-duty Plumas County sheriff’s deputy was nearly shot in the face by an intruder who broke into his home and hid in the law enforcement officer’s bathroom to wait for him on Sunday night.

The incident occurred at a residence in the Quincy area at approximately 9:30 p.m. on June 25, the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) said in a press release on Monday.

Investigators said an off-duty PCSO deputy arrived home and headed into his bathroom, but when he flipped on the light, a man with a semiautomatic handgun pointed the weapon at his face.

The intruder, later identified as 25-year-old San Jose resident Henry Maxwell Evans, then pulled the trigger, according to the deputy.

Although the weapon was loaded, Evans apparently forgot to chamber a round before trying to murder the deputy.

“The Deputy reacted quickly, subduing Evans using defensive tactics, dislodging the firearm from Evans,” the PCSO said.

After disarming his would-be killer, the deputy gained control of him and yanked him out of the bathroom and away from the firearm, investigators said.

He then placed Evans in handcuffs and called the sheriff’s office for assistance.

Evans was booked into the Plumas County Correctional Facility on charges of attempted homicide and burglary.

His bail was set at $500,000.

A motive for the attack has not been released.

It is unclear whether Evans targeted the deputy in specific or if they knew one another prior to the incident.

“We are thankful that our employee was not harmed in what could have been a tragic loss for the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office as well as the community,” the PCSO said on Monday. “We remind all citizens of Plumas County to keep your homes secure and be vigilant in your neighborhoods.”
