Gunman Ambushed Cop Driving Down Road, Shot Him Repeatedly Through Vest

Selma, AL – In what appears to be an attempted assassination of a police officer, a Selma officer was shot by a high-powered rifle while he was driving on patrol.

The incident happened at around 4 a.m. at Broad Street and Furniss Avenue, according to WBRC.

The unidentified officer was driving through the intersection when he was suddenly shot twice in the chest.

Both shots went through the officer’s body armor, and police later recovered rifle ammunition casings on scene.

The officer sped away from the attack, but then lost control of his vehicle and crashed.

Another officer arrived and transported him to Vaughn Medical Center in a patrol car.

The officer is expected to survive his wounds. Selma Police Chief Spencer Collier said the the officer is a 10-year veteran.

The chief called the attack an ambush, and that they believe more than one person was involved.

Authorities have not released any information about the attackers or if they have identified any potential suspects.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has taken over the investigation.
