San Antonio, TX – A Good Samaritan who chased a car theft suspect on Sunday was shot and killed for his efforts.

Police said that 23-year-old Jacob Gabriel jumped into a car that had been left idling outside a San Antonio gas station, and drove off at about 3:40 p.m. on Aug. 5, the Associated Press reported.

Witnesses who saw the vehicle theft occur jumped into their own vehicles and chased the alleged car thief.

Gabriel eventually stopped, got out of the car, and was confronted, according to the Associated Press.

Surveillance cameras at the Stay Express Inn captured the fight that spilled into the motel’s parking lot from the access road when the Good Samaritans chasing Gabriel caught up with him.

In the video, Gabriel can be seen carrying a handgun. Officer said he found the weapon inside the car that he had stolen, the KMOV reported.

The Good Samaritans struggled with Gabriel and tried to subdue him near the entrance to the parking lot, but he managed to get away and flee.

They pursued him to the back of the parking lot and then back around to the access road, and that’s where police said one of the Good Samaritans was fatally shot by Gabriel’s stolen gun, according to KMOV.

Gabriel fled on foot, and police officers, K9s and a helicopter responded to the scene en masse to search for the armed and dangerous suspect.

As police searched the area, a housekeeper at the Stay Express Inn noticed the curtains and door closed on a room that was supposed to be open, and notified the manager. He opened the door and was greeted by Gabriel’s gun, he told KMOV.

The manager told the police, and they were able to take Gabriel into custody at the motel without further injuries.

San Antonio Police Public Information Officer Romana Lopez told Blue Lives Matter in an email that officers recovered the stolen firearm used to kill the Good Samaritan.

Gabriel was arrested and charged with theft of a vehicle, theft of a firearm, and murder, Officer Lopez wrote.

He was being held on bonds totaling $170,000 at the Bexar County Jail.

The suspect’s attorney claimed that the killing was self-defense.

“Self-defense is a two-way street,” he said.

Police have not yet released the name of the Good Samaritan who was murdered. He was 31 years old, KMOV reported.
