Queens, NY – An employee at an overnight childcare facility allegedly stabbed three infants and two adults early Friday morning, police said.

The unnamed 52-year-old employee plunged a knife into the stomachs of a 1-month-old girl and a 3-day-old girl, WNBC reported.

The other infant – a 20-day-old little girl – was slashed on her lip, chin, and ear, police said.

All three of the babies were listed in critical, but stable condition.

The incident occurred just before 4 a.m., when the suspect attacked another female employee, stabbing her eight times in the torso.

When a 31-year-old father of one of the children tried to intervene, the assailant stabbed him in the leg.

The suspect then began slashing and stabbing the children.

Police responded to the scene and located the attacker unconscious on the floor of the facility’s basement. She had a self-inflicted slash wound to her left wrist, and was taken to a local hospital.

She has since regained consciousness.

“She is not in critical condition,” New York Assistant Police Chief Juanita Holmes said during a press conference.

The adult victims were listed in critical, but stable condition.

A butcher knife and a meat cleaver were recovered at the scene, WNBC reported.

Investigators said that four male infants, five female infants, and several parents were at the home at the time of the attack.

“Part of the building is a living quarter,” Chief Holmes confirmed. “They’re apartments…multiple families.”

All of the victims are Chinese, Chief Holmes said.

It was unclear whether the program was a licensed facility, but investigators had located paperwork indicating the home was a daycare.

According to WNBC, an “official briefed on the investigation” said that the business was a maternity center where mothers received help caring for their infants.

It was also a location where citizens of other countries went to give birth to their children, who would then become U.S. citizens, WNBC reported.

Police have not disclosed the motive behind the attack.
