Oakleaf, FL- An Air & Marine Operations agent is in the hospital after he was ambushed and shot while carrying groceries to his personal vehicle on Tuesday.
UPDATE: It was originally reported that this was a Border Patrol agent. He was actually an Air & Marine Operations agent.
The incident happened at around 3:11 PM in the Oakleaf Commons Shopping Center on Oakleaf Plantation Parkway, just west of Branan Field Chaffee Road, according to News4Jax.
The agent is a pilot who was in uniform, with this badge and gun visible, carrying bags of groceries from the Publix store to his personal truck, when an 18-year-old male drove up behind him and opened fire.
The agent was completely caught off-guard while carrying groceries and never had the chance to return fire.
The suspect then drove off and fatally shot himself before his car crashed into other vehicles.
With the shooter dead, there’s no known motive for the shooting besides that he just wanted to murder a law enforcement officer. There is no known previous contact between the agent and the shooter.
“It is disturbing. It is something that we live with each and every day, knowing that going out in our community there are individuals that would target us just for the badge we wear on our chest,” Clay County Sheriff’s Office Chief of Investigations Wayne McKinney said.
“It is disturbing, but we’re trying to keep our feelings out of it at this time and conduct the investigation to the utmost of our abilities.”
The shooter has not yet been identified, but investigators released that he did have an active warrant for dealing drugs.
It’s not clear at this time how many times the agent was shot, but witnesses report hearing four to five shots. The agent’s condition has not been released.
Our thoughts and prayers are with this wounded hero.
