Lakewood, NJ – A New Jersey father was charged with neglect after a photo of his 10-month-old baby crawling across a street went viral.

The speed limit on that road was 40 mph.

Evgeniy Dorman, 41, gave himself up to police on Friday and was charged with cruelty and neglect of a child and was released pending a court appearance, according to the Asbury Park Press.

Police said the baby boy crawled through an open front door that was probably left open by an older sibling and then crawled about 140 feet onto the road, according to Lakewood Police Department Sergeant Gregory Staffordsmith.

Cory Cannon was a passerby that took a photo of the baby in the street and reported the incident to police at about 6 p.m. on Sept. 22, according to the Asbury Park Press.

A neighbor approached Cannon and then took the 10-month-old boy back to his parents. The parents didn’t know the baby was gone until he was returned home, according to police.

Cannon told the Asbury Park Press than he watched the neighbor return the baby to his home and the door was ajar and a young child answered.

A woman who identified herself as the baby’s caretaker told the Asbury Park Press that the incident was an accident. Neighbors who asked not to be identified told the Asbury Park Press that the parents were devoted parents who made a mistake.

“It’s devastating what people are saying on social media,” one anonymous neighbor told the Asbury Park Press. “I’m personally destroyed by this because I know the family.”

That anonymous neighbor said the family often times goes to the park to play with their children.

“It’s horrible, and it’s not the parents’ fault because babies do climb out of cribs,” said Mary Bauer, a resident of Lakewood, according to WPIX.
