Houston, TX – Former NFL fullback Jameel Cook is accused of stealing more than $100,000 by filing fraudulent claims for medical and other expenses.

The money came from a fund set up for retired pro football players.

Cook, 39, last played in the NFL in 2008.

He allegedly put in for the false claims for benefits from the Gene Upshaw NFL Player Health Reimbursement Account, according to the Associated Press.

Cook was charged Friday with securing the execution of documents by deception, according to Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg. That’s a third-degree felony. If found guilty, he faces up to 10 years in prison.

Prosecutors said that Cook, who lives in Montgomery, Texas, put in 30 fraudulent claims from March 2016 to September 2017.

Cook was drafted by Tampa Bay in the sixth round of the 2001 draft. In the NFL, he played fullback and caught 84 passes for 510 yards over his eight year NFL career. He rushed for 43 yards on 14 carries in his career. Cook was a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2002 Super Bowl team.

This isn’t Cook’s first encounter with the police.

In 2008, he was charged with possession of marijuana, according to the News-Gazette. Cook was pulled over and had marijuana in his car.

The charge was dropped when there was not enough evidence to show Cook knew he had marijuana in his car. Cook also faced charges of driving with an invalid license, failure to maintain car insurance, no front license plate and an expired inspection sticker.
