Los Angeles, CA – A pit bull who was adopted two weeks ago died from physical and sexual abuse, according to staff from an animal shelter that wants the police to investigate.

The 5-year-old dog named Cargo was abandoned Aug. 6 in front of a house in a south Los Angeles neighborhood, according to KTLA-TV.

Dianty Marquez of the Anaheim-based Ghetto Rescue Foundation was at the scene when the pit bull was dumped. Marquez took video when she arrived and it shows Cargo suffering.

“Can you feel this?” Marquez said as she petted Cargo.

A resident who wanted to remain anonymous said neighbors reported seeing two men drop off the dog and then leave. The woman said she couldn’t reach any city or county animal control officers so she reached out to Ghetto Rescue.

Marquez was able to get Cargo into her car and took the dog to emergency veterinary care, according to KTLA. In a Facebook post, Marquez said that the vet clinic was closed but employees showed up after-hours to help with Cargo.

“That’s when we got word that there had been some trauma in her vaginal area, and they made her as comfy as they could,” Marquez said, according to KTLA.

But on Tuesday, Cargo died. Marquez said it was because the dog had some type of blunt force trauma that caused her aorta to rupture. The dog had no other injuries that could be found.

“We come across a lot of different abuse cases and it’s definitely one of those I’m not going to forget,” Marquez said, according to KTLA. “It’s going to stick with me.”

In a Facebook post, Marquez assured people that Cargo was not in pain.

“She was comfortable, and on pain medication,” Marquez wrote. “The only thing we can be thankful for is she did not die on the sidewalk alone.”

Marquez wrote that Cargo was adopted on July 23. They contacted the person listed as the adopter of Cargo but that person was not actually involved in the adoption of Cargo, according to a Facebook post by Marquez.
