East Bank, WV – An East Bank volunteer firefighter was arrested for driving while intoxicated last Tuesday morning, after he saw emergency vehicles down the street from his home, and decided to go see what was going on.

David McGuire, 28, got behind the wheel of his personal vehicle, backed out of his driveway, and crashed into the side of Kanawha County Sheriff’s Corporal Stephanie Adams’ patrol car, the West Virginia News reported.

Cpl. Adams had just responded to the area to investigate a report of an unattended death, and was sitting in her cruiser when the collision occurred, according to WCHS.

She got out to speak with McGuire after the crash, at which point she noticed that his eyes were bloodshot and glassy.

McGuire was also allegedly slurring his words, and had an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath, police said.

“When I asked Mr. McGuire to exit the vehicle, he became belligerent, argumentative and aggressive,” Cpl. Adams wrote in the criminal complaint, according to WCHS. “Mr. McGuire was unsteady on his feet and had to be assisted to my cruiser to he would not fall down.”

Field sobriety tests provided probable cause that he was under the influence, and he was late found to have a blood-alcohol content of 0.16 percent.

McGuire is being held on $5,000 bond at the South Central Regional Jail.

The East Bank Volunteer Fire Department did not respond to a request for comment, according to WCHS.
