Oklahoma City, OK – At least nine children were bitten by a dog on an elementary school playground on Monday.

Police received a call at about 1 p.m. on Nov. 19 about a dog that had attacked several children at Millard Fillmore Elementary School in the 5200-block of South Blackwelder Avenue, KFOR reported.

The dog reportedly got loose near South Blackwelder Avenue and Southwest 44th Street and made its way to the nearby school, according to KOCO.

There were 28 children in the schoolyard when the dog attack occurred, according to Oklahoma City Fire Department officials.

KOKH reported at the scene said the students on the playground at the time of the attack were third and fourth graders.

Nine children were bitten, but 12 children were transported to local hospitals, according to KFOR.

The fire department transported five children, and seven children were taken to the hospital by their parents, KWTV reported.

The extent of the victims’ injuries had not yet been released; however, KOKH reported from the scene that most of the children suffered superficial wounds, and that several were hurt while they were running away from the dog.

Police said there were three teachers on the playground when the dog attacked, KFOR reported.

One of the teachers actually tackled the dog to prevent it from going inside the school.

KOKH reported from the scene that although all of the school’s playgrounds were fenced in, the gates appeared to be open and the playground accessible. However, it was not known if the gates were open at the time of the attack.

Initially, police corralled the dog and put it in a police vehicle until animal control officers arrived on the scene, KOKH reported.

Oklahoma City Animal Welfare arrived on the scene and took the dog into its custody, according to KFOR.

The breed of the dog has not yet been confirmed. Numerous media outlets have reported it was a Pitbull mix, while others have said the offender was a Rottweiler.
