Detroit, MI – A member of the Detroit police oversight board submitted his resignation last week after he was caught by Wayne County sheriff’s deputies with a prostitute’s head in his lap.

Bryan Ferguson was elected in 2022 to represent District 1 on the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners, the Detroit Free Press reported.

The board is made up of 11 civilians elected to have supervisory authority over the Detroit Police Department.

Ferguson had previously served as the chairman of the police oversight board.

Detroit Police Captain Jason Bates said undercover narcotics officers encountered Ferguson at about 7:15 a.m. on July 12 inside his pickup truck parked near Schoolcraft Road and Schaefer Highway, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Capt. Bates said the undercover officers reported Ferguson was engaged in a sex act with a known prostitute who had her head in his lap when they approached.

The elected official charged with making sure police don’t do unethical things like using prostitutes then asked the deputies if they could “help him out,” according to the Detroit Free Press.

“Ferguson is alleged to have told the sheriff’s deputies that he is a police commissioner, according to a sheriff’s official, and asked: ‘Can you help me out with this?'” WXYZ reported.

The deputies cited the police oversight commissioner on July 13 for “indecent obscene conduct” for soliciting a prostitute in his vehicle.

The prostitute, who was known to the officers, was also cited, WXYZ reported.

Ferguson denied the allegations and claimed it was all a big misunderstanding, WJBK reported.

He claimed that the woman had jumped into his vehicle without his permission because she was running away from another man, and that he was trying to remove her when the law enforcement officers saw them.

“I start screaming at her: Get the F out of my truck. I was cussing – get the F out of my truck. Get out. Get out right now!” Ferguson told WXYZ.

Ferguson has denied that any sexual contact occurred.

Despite his denial of the charges, the member of the police oversight commission submitted his resignation late last week, WXYZ reported.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the residents of Detroit in police oversight. After further consideration of the best interests of my family and the Board, I am choosing to resign as District 1 Police Commissioner effectively immediately,” Ferguson’s resignation letter read.

The Board of Police Commissioners accepted Ferguson’s resignation on July 14, WXYZ reported.

The board’s vice chair, Reverend Jim Holley, said he was glad for the move.

“Obviously, very much disappointed and unbelievable but more than anything else, I think he did the right thing by offering his resignation,” the reverend told WJBK.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has the authority to appoint a replacement until a new District 1 commissioner is elected next election cycle.
