Detroit, MI – A Detroit police officer is fighting for his life after a speeding SUV hit him and drove off.
The incident happened at around 2:40 a.m. Sunday morning as the officer and his partner were dispersing a crowd from a party at West McNichols Road and Stahelin Avenue, according to Detroit Free Press.
“There were two marked police vehicles, lights going, and there was a gap between them. This vehicle went between those cars, eastbound, striking our officer,” Chief James Craig told the media.
The suspect’s vehicle was estimated to be going 60-70 miles per hour.
Officers attempted first aid on scene and then the officer was transported to Sinai Grace Hospital in very critical condition.
Law enforcement are actively searching for the dark blue or black Jeep Compass which struck the officer.
“The only thing I can tell you right now is he’s still very critical. They mayor and I had a conversation with his family. We are all asking for prayers of recovery, full recovery, for this young man,” Chief Craig said.
The officer’s name has not been released, but he was described as a 30 year old officer who has been with the department for a year. He had just gotten married a month ago.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer and his family.
