Nashville, TN – One of country music singer Randy Travis’ stagehands was fatally shot by his 72-year-old wife at the couple’s home on Sunday amid allegations he was having an affair, according to police.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) said in a press release on Tuesday that 68-year-old Thomas Roberts died on the front porch of his residence from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Police responded to the couple’s house on Howard Avenue at about 8 p.m. on July 9 after receiving a call about the shooting.

The call was placed by a neighbor who heard gunfire and found Thomas Roberts’ body on the porch, NBC News reported.

Investigators said Thomas Roberts’ wife, 72-year-old Christine Ann Roberts, “said that she shot her husband because he had cheated on her.”

According to court documents, the neighbor who called 911 allegedly told homicide detectives Christine Roberts also confessed to him that she shot her husband “because she discovered he had cheated on her,” NBC News reported.

A pistol was recovered at the scene, according to police.

Christine Roberts was charged with criminal homicide and was being held on a $100,000 bond.

Thomas Roberts spent about 20 years working for country music legend Randy Travis as a lighting technician prior to Travis suffering a stroke in 2013, NBC News reported.

“The stage has gone dim with the passing of Thom Roberts,” Travis said in a Facebook post on Monday.

He described Thomas Roberts as one of the best stage lighting technicians in the business.

“Thom not only had a magical sense about lighting a stage; but, he had a quiet, charismatic presence that ignited your soul,” Travis wrote. “Always willing, with a ‘can do’ and ‘happy to do it’ attitude. He was a gentle giant of a man that wore a constant smile on his face and carried a song in his heart. One would search a lifetime to find a kinder, gentler spirit. Thom was my friend and I loved him dearly.”

The country music star, who is slated to go back on tour next week, said Thomas Roberts’ memory would be with him despite his physical absence.

“I will once again be reminded of the blessing I was given to have Thom Roberts on the road with us for so many miles, and so many memories,” Travis wrote. “It certainly won’t be the same; and, I know I speak for the entire band and crew when I say the light that he truly created, in our hearts, will never be extinguished or forgotten.”

“Tonight, I will look toward heaven and am sure I will see flashes of Thom’s handiwork in the night sky—letting us know he is home, and all is well,” he concluded.
