Jackson, MS – An alleged carjacker ultimately burned to death inside a stolen vehicle, after he crashed into a gas pump and began firing his gun into the air when people came to help, police said.

The incident occurred at the West Capitol Street Eagle Stop gas station at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, WLBT reported.

Police had been on the lookout for the vehicle since earlier that morning, when it was carjacked in the city of Byram, Jackson Police Department Sergeant Roderick Holmes said.

Surveillance footage showed the SUV as it flew into the parking lot and veered directly into the gas pump, where it burst into flames, Sgt. Holmes explained.

Jackson police and firefighters rushed to the scene, but the driver held them at bay by pulling out a handgun and firing it into the air, WJTV reported.

“When they arrived, they found a black SUV that had collided with a gas pump and the vehicle was on fire with the driver still inside,” the department said in a press release. “Jackson Fire Department responded to assist, but the driver displayed a handgun and fired several shots into the air which prevented firemen from approaching.”

“The driver never pointed the weapon at anyone and never appeared to make any efforts to exit the vehicle,” the release read. “He subsequently died as a result of the fire.”

Two other vehicles parked nearby were also damaged in the blaze, WJTV reported.
