Sacramento, CA – California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill Friday that will not allow most people under the age of 21 from buying a gun in his state.

The law will prevent people under 21 from buying rifles and other types of guns, according to NBC News.

California had already banned people under 21 from buying handguns.

The new law exempts members of the military, law enforcement and people with hunting licenses from the restriction, according to NBC News.

One guns-right spokesman called Brown’s actions “nuts.”

“Governor Brown just told millions of people under 21 that they can fight and die for our state and country with machine guns, but they can’t buy a gun for self-defense in their homes, said Craig DeLuz, spokesman for the Firearms Policy Coalition, a gun-rights group, according to The Mercury News. “That’s nuts.”

State Senator Anthony Portantino, a Democrat, said a shooting at a Florida high school earlier this year that killed 17 people was the reason he sponsored Senate Bill 1100 banning gun sales and transfers to people under the age of 21.

“I was determined to help California respond appropriately to the tragic events our country has recently faced on high school campuses,” Portantino said, according to NBC News. “I feel it is imperative that California leads when Washington refuses to act.”

Brown also signed other bills that restrict gun ownership.

The governor signed a bill that prohibited people from owning a gun who have been hospitalized or placed on involuntary psychiatric hold for risk of hurting themselves or other people twice in one year, according to NBC News.

He also signed a bill that prohibited people with certain domestic violence misdemeanors from owning guns for life.

Brown vetoed bills that would have banned guns shows at the Cow Palace in Daly City and limited how many rifles and shotguns that a person can purchase in a single month.
