Englewood, CO – The Denver Broncos fired backup quarterback Chad Kelly on Wednesday, after the 24-year-old was arrested for criminal trespassing early Tuesday morning.

Other players told ESPN that Kelly had been acting up at a team Halloween party thrown by linebacker Von Miller on Monday night.

He was asked to leave the party by teammates, and escorted out, but he didn’t go home.

Instead, the football player went into a stranger’s home uninvited at 1 a.m. on Oct. 22 and sat down on the couch, mumbling incoherently, ESPN reported.

Kelly sat down next to a woman who was holding her two-year-old son and terrified her.

The toddler’s father, Marco Torrez, hit Kelly on the back with an aluminum and plastic vacuum hose tube, and chased him out of the house, according to ESPN.

“I tell you that much she was really, really scared,” Torrez told KDVR. “She was with my son on the couch.”

The woman told police that she thought her door was locked, but investigators were unable to find any sign of forced entry.

Police found Kelly inside a parked, black SUV about a block from the couple’s home.

He had reportedly returned to Miller’s party and was about to leave via Uber when he was apprehended.

The quarterback was arrested and charged with criminal trespassing, ESPN reported. He posted a $2,500 bond and was released from jail.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office said that there were no drug or alcohol tests performed on Kelly.

Kelly had signed a four-year, $2.5 million contract with the Denver Broncos in 2017.

He was the last player taken in the 2017 draft. The final player selected in the NFL draft is traditionally called “Mr. Irrelevant.”

Kelly is the nephew of Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, who played for the Buffalo Bills.

Initially, team management expressed its disappointment over the situation.

“We are very, very disappointed in Chad,” Broncos General Manager John Elway said in a radio interview on Tuesday. “When the team has a get-together, that’s always a good thing. And the camaraderie that goes along with being a team… One person put a dent in it. We are going to look into this. The charges are very, very serious.”

But on Wednesday, management had participated in some long meetings, and made a decision to waive Kelly, Head Coach Vance Joseph told reporters at a press conference.

“We thought it was the best thing for the Broncos, and for Chad. So that’s our job. It’s to figure out the best thing for the football team. That’s why it was done,” Joseph said.

He said that Kelly had no pattern of behavioral problems with the team at the time of the incident despite a past fraught with issues.

Kelly was kicked off the Clemson University football team in 2014 after he argued with his coaches during the spring game, and ended up finishing his college football career at University of Mississippi, ESPN reported.

He was arrested for a bar fight later in 2014 and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

In 2016, Kelly caused a scene at his brother’s high school football game when he ran down onto the field and threatened players after his brother took a late hit, according to ESPN.

He had to be restrained by coaches on that occasion.
