Talladega, AL – Two police officers were wounded, and a man and a woman were killed, during a gun battle outside the Talladega Walmart early Wednesday morning.

The incident began at about 4:30 a.m. on Nov. 21 when the Talladega Police Department received a 911 call for help with a possible kidnapping that had just occurred at the Chevron station across the street from the Walmart on Haynes Road, according to AL.com.

When officers arrived on the scene, they quickly located the suspect vehicle and its driver, the man who was considered to be the suspect in the kidnapping.

The suspect opened fire on police, striking one officer. Officers returned fire, fatally shooting the gunman, WVTM reported.

The reported kidnapping victim was found dead inside the suspect’s vehicle, AL.com reported.

The officer who was shot was airlifted to University of Alabama – Birmingham Hospital’s Trauma Center. He was expected to survive, AL.com reported.

Alabama State Bureau of Investigation Lieutenant Jon Riley said a second officer was also wounded, but not by gunfire.

That wounded officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment, AL.com reported.

Lt. Riley said police do not yet know if the suspect and his kidnapping victim were previously acquainted, or if the kidnapping attempt was random.

Numerous law enforcement agencies were on the scene to assist. The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation will be the lead investigating agency.
