Fort Worth, TX – Three people were shot in what police believe was an attempted bank robbery on Wednesday morning in Fort Worth, and the two “heavily-armed” gunmen escaped and are at large, according to KDFW.
The incident occurred at about 9:20 a.m. on July 19, when police received a bank robbery call from the Veritex Bank.
Three women were shot at the Veritex Bank, located at 2424 Merrick Street, and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that all three were bank employees.
Fort Worth Police Sergeant Chris Britt addressed reporters at an early press conference and said there were other employees in the bank at the time who were not injured. It was not known whether there were customers in the bank at the time of the shooting.
Sgt. Britt said that police were looking for at least two suspects, and that investigators were still trying to confirm that the incident was an actual robbery attempt.
He said that the robbery unit was on the scene, and that several federal agencies had arrived to assist with the investigation.
Police do not yet know what kind of weapons the gunmen used, nor what happened inside the bank other than the shootings, but investigators were reviewing security surveillance footage, Sgt. Britt said.
“We are still looking for the suspects,” he said. “It appears there were at least two people involved.”
Sgt. Britt said that anybody who was in the area and who saw anything unusual was asked to call the Fort Worth police.
MedStar Spokesman Matt Zavadsky said two of the women had been transported to John Peter Smith Hospital, and the third was taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth.
The gunshots were serious but Zavadsky said he did not believe the women’s wounds were life-threatening, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.
Police said they were searching for two male suspects who were believed to be heavily armed. There were no other descriptions of the suspects.
KDFW reported this is the first shooting in a bank in Fort Worth since 2009, when a gunman was killed during an armed robbery attempt.
