Chicago, IL – A Chicago police officer was shot on the city’s South Side on Tuesday morning.

Police said that an officer from the Chicago Police Department’s 6th District was making a traffic stop at about 11 a.m. in the 8700-block of South Marshfield Avenue when he was shot, WLS reported.

The officer was hit in the bullet-proof vest, and officials said they believed the ballistic vest had taken the brunt of the hit from the bullet.

Officers returned fire and shot the suspect who had fired on the officer, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The wounded officer was transported to Little Company of Mary Hospital, according to police.

The suspect who shot the officer was also transported to the hospital, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Some sources said the suspect had been fatally shot by police, but officials have not yet confirmed or denied that information.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson was en route to the hospital, according to WLS.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the scene and were investigating a black Chevrolet SUV that was parked at the scene.

St. Ethelreda School, located only a couple blocks from where the gunfire erupted in the Gresham neighborhood, was put into lockdown, WMAQ reported.

This shooting comes less than 24 hours after Chicago Police Officer Samuel Jimenez was fatally shot in a gunfight with an active shooter at Mercy Hospital.

A second officer was shot in that incident as well; however, the bullet went into the officer’s holster and lodged in the barrel of his service weapon, saving his life.

UPDATE:

Chicago Police Spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted that the wounded officer was expected to make a full recovery.

The suspect, who was shot when officers returned fire, remained in critical condition at the hospital.
