New Salem, MA – A Massachusetts state trooper was stabbed in the head at the end of a police chase on Friday.
WBZ reported that the trooper was taking the 18-year-old suspect into custody when he was attacked.
The original incident occurred in Orange but ended in nearby New Salem, the Northwestern District Attorney’s office told WBZ.
Police apprehended the suspect at the end of the chase, and were in the process of arresting him when he stabbed the trooper, according to WCVB.
WHDH reported that the suspect stabbed the state trooper multiple times.
The suspect was shot in the stomach by police and taken into custody. His medical condition was not released.
The trooper was airlifted to Worcester Hospital, and is expected to survive, WBZ reported.
Massachusetts State Police Spokesman David Procopio wrote in an email that the “suspect in Central Mass. has ended in New Salem where, during apprehension, Trooper and suspect suffered serious injuries. Response and investigation ongoing. More info will be released when appropriate. I am heading to scene and will update when I have more,” the Boston Globe reported.
WCVB reported he was undergoing surgery.
