Woonsocket, RI – Police are in a standoff with an armed man who shot a police officer early Monday morning.
Woonsocket officers initially responded to the area after receiving a call about the man, although the nature of the report was not immediately known, WJAR reported.
The suspect fled on foot when officers arrived, according to WPRI.
He began shooting at police during the foot pursuit that followed.
The officers returned fire, but when the gunman discharged his weapon again, one of the officers was hit, WJAR reported.
The officer was rushed to the Rhode Island Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg, and has been listed in stable condition.
The suspect is currently barricaded in a parking lot near the intersection of East School Street, Clinton, and Elm, near the Woonsocket Housing Authority office, WJAR reported.
Officers with the Woonsocket Police Department and the Rhode Island State Police were trying to negotiate with him.
SWAT officers in full riot gear have also arrived at the scene.
According to WJAR, a man with a drone snapped pictures from above the ongoing situation.
In the image, the gunman could be seen between a red vehicle and a white vehicle.
A group of officers stood across the lot behind at least one vehicle and a tree, the image showed.
UPDATE:
The standoff in Woonsocket ended after a large blast was heard at the scene, according to WPRO. The suspect was transported to Landmark Medical Center.
