Philadelphia, PA – A member of the Philadelphia Police Department’s SWAT Team was shot in the face on Monday morning while he was helping serve a warrant.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross that Officer Jason Potts, a 20-year veteran of the police force, was shot in the face at about 6 a.m. on Aug. 6 while officers were serving a weapons violation warrant in the 4800-block of Knox Street, according to WCAU.

Officer Potts was rushed to Temple University Hospital where he was being treated for serious facial injuries, including a broken jaw, the commissioner said.

“We do believe that he is going to survive despite the critical nature of his injuries,” Commissioner Ross said. “He’s got a ways to go.”

The incident occurred when officers twice announced themselves before making entry to the home of a 20-year old wanted man, WCAU reported.

Commissioner Ross said the SWAT officer came under fire almost immediately after entering the second door in the home, according to WCAU.

The officers returned fire and shot the man in his 50s who was firing on them, the commissioner said.

The shooter was rushed to Einstein Medical Center. His condition was unknown, WCAU reported.

A woman in her 60s was shot as she tried to flee out the back door of the home, but it was unclear who had shot her, according to Commissioner Ross.

She was listed in critical but stable condition and was expected to survive.

Commissioner Ross said the man who was the subject of the warrant was not in the home when officers made entry.

Despite the face he was wounded and bleeding heavily, Officer Potts was able to walk into the emergency room on his own steam, WCAU reported.

Commissioner Ross said the officer’s family was with him at the hospital.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said that Officer Potts, who is married with three children, was supposed to have left on vacation later today with his family.

“Our prayers are with officer Potts and his family,” Kenney said.
