Boise, ID – Police are searching for two suspects who are believed to be armed after an officer was shot during a traffic stop on Sunday afternoon.

Meridian Police Chief Jeff Lavey said the incident began when officers were conducting a felony warrant traffic stop in a residential area near the intersection of Maple Grove Road and West Ottawa Drive, south of Overland Road, KTVB reported.

Chief Lavey said during a press conference that one of suspects in the vehicle had attempted to escape on foot, and opened fire on the officers.

One Meridian police officer was shot twice in the legs.

The chief said the wounded officer returned fire and fatally shot the suspect, KTVB reported.

The wounded officer was transported to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center where he was headed into surgery.

But police said two other suspects managed to escape in a black Dodge Durango. The suspects were described as an unknown adult male and an adult Hispanic female.

Authorities have been asking residents to avoid the area or shelter in place as a manhunt was launched in the area south of Overland by law enforcement officers from Boise, Meridian, Ada County, and the Idaho State Police, according to KTVB.

Chief Lavey told reporters that police had recovered the dead suspect’s weapon at the scene, but that authorities were operating on the assumption that his associates were also armed, KTVB reported.

Anyone with information, or who sees something suspicious in the targeted area, was urged to call the police.

It’s been a difficult 24 hours in Boise, after the city experienced the biggest mass attack ever in the history of its police department on Saturday night, when a man with a knife attacked nine people, including six children.
