Anchorage, AK – Back-to-back earthquakes rocked buildings and collapsed roadways on Friday morning in Anchorage.

The first earthquake measured 7.0 and the second was 5.8, KUSA reported.

The shaking, which forced residents out onto the streets and under their desks, also triggered a Tsunami Warning for residents of Kodiak, urging them to seek higher ground immediately for a wave expected in 10 minutes.

The warning has since been cancelled, according to KUSA.

Many people returned to homes and businesses after the first earthquake, only to run back outside five minutes later when the second one hit.

David Harper told WDIV he was picking up a cup of coffee at a store when he first heard the low rumble of the earthquake.

Harper said the rumbling intensified until it sounded “like the building was just going to fall apart.”

He told WDIV he ran toward the exit with everybody else.

“The main thought that was going through my head as I was trying to get out the door was, `I want this to stop,”‘ Harper said.

He said the earthquake was “significant enough that the people who were outside were actively hugging each other. You could tell that it was a bad one.”

Residents posted pictures and video on Twitter of large sections of pavement that had collapsed on some roadways.

Many buildings sustained significant damage, and most structures will have suffered at least some cracks.
