Lafayette, IN – A Lafayette police officer was shot in the back while responding to a criminal mischief complaint on Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred at about 10:50 a.m. on Jan. 8 as officer responded to a call in the 800-block of N. 9th Street, according to a press release from the Lafayette Police Department.

While Lafayette police officers were investigating the complaint, they received word that a person wanted on a warrant was also at their location.

Suddenly, a large aggressive dog charged at the officers, and one of the officers discharged his weapon, the press release said.

Another Lafayette police officer was accidentally shot by the officer who fired his gun, the Indianapolis Star reported.

The wounded officer was transported to the hospital in “serious but stable” condition and was being treated for the gunshot, the press release said.

Police have not released the name of the wounded officer, nor that of the officer who shot them, because the incident is under investigation. They said that information would be released later.

“We want to assure the public that there are no suspects outstanding and no threat to the public,” Lafayette Police Lieutenant Brian Phillips said.
